MARLIN - BALLARD NO. 5 PACIFIC RIFLEMARLINBALLARD NO. 5 PACIFIC2937538-55Cal .38-55, 30" medium oct bbl, blue and case color finish. Straight grained American walnut stocks with crescent butt. Wood cleaning rod, beach combination front sight receiver tang sight, dbl set triggers. Bbl has beach combination front sight and standard Rocky Mountain rear sight. Bbl is stamped "38-55" on top flap near receiver. Bbl also has SN stamped on bottom flap under fore-arm. Fore-arm has SN stamped on rear face. Receiver is marked "Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven CT. U.S.A." over "Ballards Patent. Nov 5. 1861." SN is stamped on lower forward part of frame. Receiver has folding tang sight. Rifle has dbl adjustable set triggers. Lever is ring-shaped. SN is stamped on top of stock mounting tang. Stock is varnished with SN stamped on front face under receiver. Crescent buttplate is stamped with SN on inside. PROVENANCE: The Dr. Robert G. Cox Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains 80-90% dull blue finish with light speckling overall. Slight high-point wear and slight muzzle wear. Bbl sights are very good. Cal mark is sharp. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. Receiver retains traces of case color overall, especially behind hammer with the balance turning a silver brown patina. Breech block and hammer also show traces of case color. Screws retain almost all of their blue finish. Lever is a pleasing plumb brown patina overall with traces of case color in protected areas. Receiver markings are sharp. Triggers function perfectly. Stocks are fine and retain nearly all of the varnish finish with some minor scratches and dents and a few dark stains near receiver and toe of buttplate. Buttplate is a silver brown patina with slight cases of case color. Ramrod is very good. This is a very fine Ballard No. 5 Pacific Rifle.
