COOL GROUPING OF FIVE W. IRVING/JAMES REID NEW YORK CITY MADE PISTOLS. J. REID 5 REID REVS 1298, 1683, 2196, 2338, 3121 32, 32, 32, 32, 32 Cal. 32. A very neat grouping of pistols illustrating the progression of manufacturing by W. Irving and James Reid at their early New York City address. 1) Model-2 W. Irving marked revolver, low hump variation with 5-3/4" octagon bbl with front blade sight marked "Address - W. Irving 20 Cliff Street, NY." .32 cal. 7-shot cylinder. Extractor on right side of frame. Frame is low hump variation. Spur trigger, 2-pc walnut grips. 2) Model-1 .22 cal revolver. 7-shot cylinder. 3-1/2" octagon bbl with front blade sight. Straight line frame without extractor. Spur trigger, high hammer, 2-pc walnut grips. 3) Model-3A, this gun with very rare dual ignition system which can be used in either .31 cal or .32 cal 6-shot revolver with 3-1/2" octagon bbl. Front blade sight, top of bbl marked "J. Reid NY City / Pat''d Apl 28 1865". Spur trigger, low hump variation and 2-pc walnut grips. Loading gate on right side of frame. 4) Model-4A .32 cal 6-shot revolver. 4" octagon bbl with front blade sight and marked "J. Reid NY City / Pat''d Apl 28 1865". This gun with improved loading lever and loading gate on right side of frame. Brass frame, spur trigger, 2-pc walnut grips. This pistol is a low hump variation. 5) Model-4, this gun with very scarce dual ignition can be used in either .31 cal or .32 cal 6-shot revolver. 5" octagon bbl with front blade sight and marked "J. Reid NY City / Pat''d Apl 28 1865". This gun with improved loading lever and loading gate on right side of frame. Brass frame, spur trigger, 2-pc walnut grips. This pistol is a low hump variation. 2 orig Reid nipples in place in the cylinder. PROVENANCE: The Carmen Gianforte Collection. CONDITION: 1) Very good overall. Bbl retains 30-40% orig blued finish. Frame has turned gray. Grips rate very good, with handling marks and retain most of what appears to be the orig varnish. Mechanics very good. 2) Excellent. Bbl retains 25-35% orig finish. Cylinder has toned gray. Frame and top strap retain 35-40% orig blued finish. Grips are very good and retain 75% of what appears to be their orig varnish. 3) Good overall with a trace or two of orig finish on bbl and frame and a couple of spots of light pin-prick pitting on front of frame and left side of bbl. Grips rate very good and retain about half of what appears to be their orig varnish. 4) Good overall. Frame retains traces of what appears to be orig nickel finish. Few small areas of light pin-prick pitting at front of frame. Grips are very good, with old repaired crack on left grip and they retain most of what appears to be an older restored varnish. 5) Very good. Revolver retains a trace of orig blue finish on metal though mostly toned with some staining and minor corrosion throughout. Grips rate very good with what appears to be an older restored finish. There is a tiny chip on front left grip toe. 49895-7 JSL73 (2,500-4,250)
