COLLECTOR''S LOT OF FOUR CIVIL WAR ERA PERCUSSION PISTOLS. HENRY DERRINGER, JAMES WARNER, PETTENGILL, BACON & CO 4 PERC PISTOLS NSN, 5807, 4577, NSN .41, .28, .44, .28 IVORY 1) H. Deringer silver mounted single shot percussion pistol. 6" overall length, 3" bbl. German silver front sight and 2-silver bands near breech, top of bbl marked "Deringer/PhiladelA". Lock marked "Deringer/PhiladelA" and lightly scroll engraved. Top strap lightly scroll engraved, as is silver shield behind tang. Butt nicely checkered with engraved silver teardrop. Trigger guard bow lightly floral engraved with pineapple finial at front. Silver mounted wedge mounts nicely engraved. 2) James Warner Springfield, Mass. with 3" round bbl. Cone front sight. 6-shot round cylinder. 2-pc "certifiable antique ivory" grips. Frame, cylinder, and back strap are nicely floral and scroll engraved, top strap with line engraving. SN stamped on butt. 3) Scarce Pettengill Army Revolver 7-1/2" octagon bbl, with nickel cone sight. 6-shot round cylinder. Stamped with SN. Mounted with smooth 2-pc walnut grips, flared at bottom. Left side of bbl stamped "WW" (inspectors mark of William Walters). Right side of top strap marked "Pettengill''s Patent 1856". Remnants of cartouche still remain on left grip. 4) Bacon & Co. Pepper Box pistol, 6-shot under-hammer. Bbl marked "Bacon & Co./Norwich C-T." and "Cast Steel". Length 7-3/4" total length. Frame is nicely scroll engraved. 2-pc walnut grips. PROVENANCE: The Dr. Robert G. Cox Estate Collection. CONDITION: 1) Very good. Bbl retains 40-50% even brown finish. Lock, hammer and top strap are dark and appear orig. Silver lightly tarnished and appears untouched as found. Checkering is crisp. Stock is sound except for a 3/4" grain separation near muzzle on right side. Bore is very good with strong rifling. A cute little gun. 2) Very good to excellent as found. Bbl retains 20-30% nice high polish orig blue. Frame has toned, but retains strong traces of orig blue as does back strap, trigger guard, cylinder, and butt. 3) About good. All metal surfaces are brown with minor areas of surface erosion. Grips are fair with minor losses at toe. Left grip with loss at frame and full length crack. Butt with minor impressions. Mechanics are a tad loose. 4) Good. All metal surfaces with even brown finish. Light pin-prick pitting and a few minor impressions, particularly on bbl. Grips fit well and appear sound with small losses on right grip at frame. 50019-194 JSL103 (2,500-4,000)
