PALMETTO ARMORY SINGLE SHOT MODEL 1842 PISTOL, FAMOUS FAKE. PALMETTO GLAZE & CO 1842 PERC NSN 54 CAL Cal. 54. Palmetto Armory pistols are considered secondary confederate weapon though made for the state of South Carolina in 1853. This gun appears correct in configuration with no inspector marks on any parts. Bbl and lock markings are in the correct style "WM GLAZE & CO" and proofs "P / V / palmetto tree". This gun however, is no doubt an early fake dating back to the 1950''s. Two excellent articles written about these clever fake pistols appear on pg 19 of the January, 1962 American Rifleman by well known collector Harry Knode. Later, a very scholarly article was written in the journal of The American Society of Arms Collectors, issue 74, pgs 74-80, by Peter A. Schmidt, well known antique arms authority. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Fair overall. Markings are very good as can be seen in photos. Lock fit is poor with gap at top. At least one lock screw appears replaced. Brass has old cleaning and varnish with considerable wear. Iron overall is cleaned and gray overall with salt & pepper pitting. Stock is sound with numerous small blemishes and missing wood from burn out just behind bolster. Mechanically gun is functional with pitted smooth bore. 49973-71 JS (600-800)
