RARE SHARPS MODEL 1851 BOX LOCK CARBINE WITH THREE DIGIT NUMBER CIVILIAN ISSUE. SHARPS 1851 374 52 CAL Cal .52 Percussion, 21-5/8" bbl, blue and case color finish. Straight grain American walnut stocks. Long saddle ring bar on left side. Bbl has standard brass front sight with folding leaf rear sight. Bbl has no other markings. Brass bbl band with saddle ring bar attached. Receiver is marked "C. Sharps Patent 1848" on upper tang with SN 374 to the rear of it. Carbine has a Maynard tape primer system mounted on right side. Primer box is marked "Edward Maynard Patentee 1846". Receiver is stamped "R.S.L. on the bottom left side behind breech block. Breech block is unmarked and has a platinum ring on the front face. Lever is marked with an oval in front of 2 on right side near hinge. Stocks are unmarked. Brass buttplate is unmarked. Long saddle ring bar is attached to left side of receiver and bbl band. fore-stock is unmarked. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good to fine for this Model. Bbl is smooth plumb brown patina overall with some slight varnish stains near fore-stock. Bore is dark with very strong rifling. Receiver is a smooth plumb brown patina overall with some old cleaning marks. There are some varnish stains around lock. There are traces of orig blue on primer door. All receiver markings are sharp. Hammer retains traces of blue finish. Lever retains traces of blue finish in protected areas. Stocks are very good with only minor scratches and handling marks overall. Toe of buttstock has an old repair with 2 brass screws through the wood. Fore stock is very good with a few dents on right side. Stocks have an old thin coat of varnish. An opportunity to buy an extremely rare Sharps Model 1851 Box Lock Carbine. An important collector''s piece, the first Sharps made as a military style arm.
