HARD TO FIND SHARPS MODEL 1853 SLANT BREECH CARBINE US ISSUED. SHARPS 1853 13969 52 CAL Cal. 52 percussion. 20" bbl. Blue and case colored finish with straight grained American walnut stocks. Long saddle ring bar on left side. Bbl has standard carbine sights with a brass bbl band that mounts the saddle ring bar. Sharps bbl address in front of rear sight. Lockplate has Sharps patent "1852" stamped behind hammer. Receiver is otherwise unmarked. Lever catch has "V" inspector mark. Stock has remnants of cartouche on left side opposite hammer and "D 89" deeply stamped on left side of butt. Brass carbine butt is unmarked. Patch box has "3" stamped on inside of lid. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl is a silver-brown finish overall with clear bbl markings and good sights. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. Receiver is a silver-gray finish overall with slight traces of case color in front of hammer. Hammer also shows considerable traces of case color. Lockplate has some erosion. Patent mark is sharp. Lever retains traces of case color in protected area. Breechblock also shows traces of case color. Stocks are very good and full-sized with dents and scratches overall especially at wrist. Only remnants of inspector cartouche remains. There are some illegible initials stamped over cartouche. The company mark on left side of butt is sharp. Buttplate and patch box are a pleasing mustard patina with some light cleaning marks. Forend is very good and shows no visible marks. A scarce and hard to find Model 1853 Sharps carbine. One of those issued to the 1st and 2nd Dragoons during the 1850s. 49973-36 TEP (3,000-5,000)
