LOT OF 2 CIVIL WAR CAVALRY CARBINES: GWYN & CAMPBELL CARBINE AND SMITH CARBINE. GWYN & CAMPBELL/SMITH 1862 TYPE 1/CAVALRY 4935/5267 52 CAL/50 CAL 1) Cal. 52. 20" bbl. Blue and case colored finish. Straight grained American walnut stock. SN match on bbl, frame, and breechblock. Bbl has standard front sight with 2-leaf rear sight. Receiver is marked "UNION RIFLE". Lock is marked Gwyn & Campbell Patent 1862 Hamilton O. Stock shows a faint cartouche on forward left side opposite lock and is otherwise unmarked. There is a "T" proof mark over receiver SN and on the tang of buttplate. 2) Cal. 50. 21 5/8" 1/2 rnd, 1/2 oct bbl. Standard sights for this model. "L.F.R" proof at left breech of bbl. Receiver is marked on forward left side "Manufactured by AM/N/MCH/N/ WKS/ SPRINGFIELD, MASS." Rear left side of receiver is marked address over Poultney & Trimble (over) Baltimore, U.S.A. SN matches on receiver and bbl. Stocks are straight grained American walnut with a clear "JJC" cartouche on left side opposite lock. There is a small inspector mark on forend behind screw that appears to be "JH". PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: 1)Good. Bbl is a gray-brown patina overall with mars and scratches especially toward the breech end of bbl. Some roughness and a gouge behind rear sight. Sights are good. Bore is very dark with only traces of rifling and considerable roughness. Receiver is a gray-brown patina overall with clear markings. Lockplate is silver-gray patina with clear mark behind hammer. Stock is good with numerous bruises and dents overall commensurate with the hard service of this carbine. Inspector cartouche is barely visible on left side. 1 of about 8200 produced circa 1863-1864. 2) Fine. Bbl retains 90% of dull blue finish with some staining and a few minor dents. Sights are very good. Inspector mark is sharp and clear. Bore is bright and appears unfired. Receiver retains 80% of muted case color with sharp markings. Screws are fine. Hammer is gray-brown patina. Trigger guard retains 70% bright blue finish. Stocks are very fine with a sharp cartouche and minor handling marks overall. Buttplate is a silver-gray patina. 1 of 30000 made between 1863-1864. A good chance to obtain a nice pair of carbine issued during the American Civil War. 49973-49 TEP (3,000-5,000)
