LOT OF 3: 2 CIVIL WAR CARBINES AND 1 SHOTGUN: W. RICHARDS SxS, ENFIELD MODEL 58, MERRILL 2ND TYPE. W. RICHARDS, ENFIELD, MERRILL SxS SG, CARBINE, 2ND TYPE NSN, NSN, 13880 12 GA, 72, 54 1) Cal. 12 ga. 19" bbls. Blue and case colored finish. Checkered walnut stock. Bbl rib is stamped "Laminated Steel". Bbls have been cut to present length. Both locks marked W. Richards. Varnished walnut stock with checkered pistol grip. Ramrod is a replacement. Belgian proofs on bottom of bbl. 2) Cal. 72 21" bbl. Bbl has been shortened. Bbl has replaced front and rear sight with commercial Birmingham proof at breech end. Carbine has a captured ramrod. Blue and case colored finish. Lock is marked "1859" over "TOWER". Lock is marked "VR" under a crown behind hammer. Brass trigger guard with "2-73" on rear tang. Straight grained walnut stock with Birmingham cartouche on right side. 3) Cal. 54. 20" bbl. Blue finish with case hardened lock. Straight grained American walnut stock. Bbl has orig sights with a VP eagle proof at breech. Loading lever is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO" over "pat. July 1858". Lock is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO" over "pat. July 1858" over "APL May 21-28-61" in front an American eagle. Lock is dated "1863" behind hammer. There are small "B" inspector mark on metal parts. Brass bbl band and brass trigger guard. Stock shows a faint cartouche on left side opposite lock, brass buttplate is marked "US" on tang with a small "89" on heel. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: 1) Good. Traces of Damascus pattern on bbl. Locks are both gray-brown patina with clear marks. Iron trigger guard is gray-brown patina with some roughness. Stock is good with numerous handling marks. Iron buttplate is dark brown patina. 2) Good for this model. Bbl is a gray-brown patina with clear marks. Front bbl band has been repaired. Lock and hammer are dark brown patina with clear markings. Trigger guard is a mellow mustard patina. Stock is good with heavy wear overall and visible Birmingham mark. Buttplate is a mellow mustard patina. Ramrod is a replacement and is easily removed. 3) Good. Bbl is a brown patina with some bright muzzle wear. Clear proof mark at breech. Bore is dark with strong rifling. Bbl band is a mellow mustard patina and is missing retaining screw. Marks on loading lever are sharp and clear. Lock and hammer are silver-gray patina with brown stain and clear marks. Trigger guard is a mellow mustard patina. Stock is good with visible cartouche. "89" stamped on saddle ring bar is clear. "89" and "US" are clearly stamped on butt. A good group of guns that definitely saw service in the "late conflict". 49973-50 TEP (2,500-3,500)
