COLT MODEL 1861 SPECIAL MUSKET.ColtSPEC MUSKETNSN.58Cal. 58. 40" bbl, straight grained American walnut stock, all metal parts are finished in the white with exception of rear sight which is blue. A wood tampion is present in muzzle. Bbl bears a "VP" proof mark over an eagle head at breech and has inspector initials "M.N.M." on left side of breech. Below inspector's mark, bbl is marked "STEEL". Bbl and lock are dated "1864". Lockplate is stamped "U.S." over "Colt's Pt FA.Mfg Co and Hartford Ct." There is an eagle stamped on nipple bolster. There is an "H" inspector mark at rear of trigger guard tang and an "F" at front of tang. Buttplate tang is marked "U.S". Stock bears two inspector cartouche stamps on left side. One is "AHM" and the other is "JT". There is a small "M" inspector mark behind trigger guard. CONDITION: Excellent. This musket appears to be in orig un-issued condition as many of this type were not issued during the war. Metal parts retain all of orig bright "white" finish which is correct for this model with some slight staining toward muzzle and few scratch marks overall. Lock, trigger guard, bbl bands, and buttplate also retain their orig white finish. Stock is very fine with crisp inspector marks. Stock shows some dents and scratches from handling but no sign of any hard use. Metal parts have traces of dried oil. This is an excellent example of a Colt Special musket made for the Civil War of which only 75,000 were produced. 49767-3 TEP (4,000-6,000)
