U.S. 1ST MODEL 1873 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY CARBINE FROM THE CUSTER SERIAL NO. RANGESPRINGFIELD ARMORY1873 CARBINE3291145-70Cal. 45-70. 22" Rnd bbl. Straight grain American walnut stock. Bbl shows no proof marks. Rear sight is attached by studs not screws and is of the carbine type. Receiver is flat-sided. Breechblock is marked "1873" over an eagle's head with crossed arrows, over "U.S.". Breechblock is of high arch type. Lock is marked "US" over "Springfield" over "1873" with a Springfield eagle clearly struck in front of hammer. The front bbl band retains the stacking swivel and an "U" inspector's mark on right side. Saddle ring rod is unmarked on left side of stock. Buttplate is marked "US" on tang and has no provision for a trapdoor compartment. Stock is of thin wrist type lacking any provision in the butt for a cleaning rod. The left side of wrist is battered over the area where the cartouche would be present. There is the remnants of a circle "P" proof behind the trigger guard. CONDITION: Good to very good for an arm of this type. Bbl shows an even gray-brown patina with numerous dents and scratches overall. Sights are good. Bore is dark with some visible rifling. Receiver, breechblock, lockplate, hammer, trigger guard, barrelband and buttplate all show an even gray-brown patina overall. Stock is good. Left side at wrist has been quite heavily battered which obliterates any evidence of the inspector's cartouche. This is an opportunity to obtain an orig unaltered 1st model 1873 Springfield carbine which is within the Custer serial no. range. 49767-9 TEP (3,000-4,000)
