US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1873 CARBINE INDIAN WAR ERA CUSTER RANGE WITH CARBINE SLING, MILITARY CARTRIDGE BELT, AND SADDLE SCABBARD. SPRINGFIELD 1873 CARBINE 40646 45-70 Cal. 45-70. 22" bbl. Blue and case colored finish. Straight grained American walnut stock with pistol grip accessory. Carbine is a 1st model with model 1877 upgrade of the stock. Balance of gun is all 1st model parts. Bbl has correct rear sight that is pinned to bbl. Bbl shows no proof marks. Receiver is flat sided. Breech block is high arch type. Lock has 3-click tumbler. Breechblock is marked "Model 1873" over "eagle head, crossed arrows and US". Lock is marked "US" over "Springfield" over "1873" with Springfield eagle stamp. Bbl band has provision for stacking swivel, which is absent. Stock is model 1877 type with thick wrist and provision for cleaning rod in butt. Cleaning rod is still in butt of stock. Stock has checkered metal pistol grip accessory. No cartouche is present on left side of stock. No circle P on stock. Carbine sling is black leather with 2-tang brass buckle and brass finial with steel hook. Cartridge belt is manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal in 1881-1887. This belt was adopted for mounted service and is of Mills type. Billet is stamped Rock Island Arsenal. Cartridge belt has 4 early carbine cartridges. Scabbard is marked "CAV" over "58". No other marks present. Scabbard has a brass reinforcement at throat. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl is a smooth gray-brown patina overall with some slight roughness. Rear sight is very good. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Breechblock is gray-brown patina as is hammer and lockplate. Lockplate has some roughness in front of hammer. Stock is very good with mars, dings and scratches commensurate with age and use of carbine. Buttplate and bbl band are gray-brown patina. Cleaning rod is very good. Carbine sling is very good with dark patina on brass parts, gray-brown patina on metal parts, and black finish on leather that is crazed overall. Cartridge belt is very good with 50% black japanning on buckle. Leather parts are black and crazed. Cartridge loops are intact with some slight fraying on the edges. Leather sword hanger and hook have been removed. Carbine scabbard is very good with intact straps and crazed leather overall. A rare opportunity to obtain an early trapdoor Springfield carbine for the Indian war era complete with accessories. 49973-1 TEP (2,000-4,000)
