This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/14/2016
COLONIAL ERA GERMANIC SMOOTH BORE FUSIL.NANANSN58 CALCal. 58. 39-1/2" full oct bbl, smooth bore bbl with flared muzzle has fixed rear sight and inset front brass blade sight, appears to be original flint with bushed vent. Musket is brass mounted with its original wood patch box and long tailed trigger guard typical of Jaeger rifles used by Hessians in American Revolution (see p 106-107 Weapons of the American Revolution by Moore, 1967.). Lock is marked "MELS" in raised cartouche with cryptic three digits of unknown origin. Musket is well made, with mouldings rear of breech, lock, escutcheon plate and rear thimble. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, metal cleaned to gray/brown. There is a break in bbl tang just forward of screw. Forestock is stretched 6-1/2" including nose cap, otherwise stock is fairly sound with worm holes in buttstock. Old ramrod with iron tip and worm is too short for this gun. Brass mounts have light olive to chocolate patinas. Mechanically gun is functional with smooth clear bore. 50156-1 JS (2,000-3,000)
