VERY FINE GERMAN FLINTLOCK FOWLER WITH FINE RELIEF AND INCISED CARVING CIRCA 1770.WITTEMANNFLINTLOCKNSN60 CALCal. 60. Fine German fowler signed "WITTEMANN / A GIESSEN". 35-1/4" oct to rnd bbl is mounted on beautiful burled walnut stock with relief floral moldings rear of breech and rear ramrod thimble, other incised and relief moldings are found on cheek piece, and around lock, trigger guard and opposite lock. Wittemann was a member of a gun making family working in Giessen mid 18th century with known examples made for German Royalty. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall, iron bbl and lock are cleaned, overall light gray/brown with staining and light pitting. Stock is sound, well fit with good color showing little wear to incised and raised relief carving, some shrinkage near butt with numerous small bruises, scratches and blemishes. Markings and engraving are crisp and discernible as can be seen in photos. Gun shows little wear, showing little use. Gun appears original and authentic with possible exception of top jaw screw. Mechanically lock functions well and bore is clean and smooth. 50156-2 JS (2,000-3,000)
