EXCEPTIONALLY FINE U.S. MODEL 1898-KRAG BOWIE EXPERIMENTAL BAYONET.9" Bowie blade dated 1900 with U.S. on ricasso. 13-5/8" overall with 2-pc walnut grip scales. Proper and correct steel scabbard. Was developed to be used as a bayonet fighting knife and tool. The project was a miserable failure and most were later modified and/or destroyed. SIZE: PROVENANCE: Ex-Robert Howard Collection. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine overall, retaining most of its armory bright polish with a very minor amount of period staining on blade. Grips are excellent with no cracks or distress. Scabbard is exceptional as well with several small areas of finish loss consistent with age and storage. A very scarce and rarely found U.S. bayonet. 50671-2 TDW (2,500-3,500)
