STEYR VOLKSSTURM VG98 RIFLE AS PRODUCED AT MAUTHAUSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP.STEYRVG9820048 MMMODERN; C&RCal. 8mm. The VG98 was a basic hunting version of the Mauser 98 rifle, it has a simple fixed rear sight dovetailed in the receiver and a shortened laminated wood stock. This particular specimen is marked "bnz 45" on top of receiver band. This specimen is unusual in that it incorporates a salvaged bbl shortened to 19-1/4" with a standard hooded front sight soldered on instead of the usual welded on method. The muzzle is counter bored. Bolt is very unusual as it has one round and one oval vent hole. Floorplate is "byf" marked with eagle over 135 indicating Mauser which is normal to find on these rifles. Highly unusual is the stock is marked to the rear of the pistol grip "BNZ 2004" (usually have no marks). Includes a late war black leather sling. Bolt is miss-matched 2009. Cupped buttplate devoid of markings. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish extremely fine, with bbl and action retaining nearly all of its late war gray phosphate finish. Bolt latch has some areas of brown patina and light pitting as does the buttplate which is an even gray patina. Laminated stock has a filled in repair just to the rear of the receiver action and laminates are starting to come apart all along the comb, but this in no way impairs the functionality of this rifle. Leather sling near excellent and completely serviceable. Bore is shiny and bright with some frosting at the muzzle end. This is a scarce and very unusual example of its kind. Would be a welcome addition to the advanced WWII German rifle Collection. 50821-7 JWK65 (4,000-6,000)
