GRIFFIN & HOWE MAGNUM SQUARE BRIDGE MAUSER DANGEROUS GAME RIFLE. GRIFFIN HOWE BOLT RIFLE 20 375 H&H MODERN; C&R (ca 1925) Cal. 375 H&H. 24-1/2" Medium weight round sporter bbl is engraved "No 20 GRIFFIN & HOWE, Inc. NEW YORK" on top. Caliber is on left rear. Bbl is fitted with two folding leaf rear sight in sleeved-on base, and with sleeved-on front ramp holding faux-ivory bead. Ramp is fitted with knurled sight protector. Bbl is also fitted with sleeved-on wide sling eye. Commercial Mauser magnum length square bridge action has top of receiver ring and bridge stippled. A Lyman 48 receiver sight has been fitted with staff cut into bridge. Left receiver wall is marked "WAFFENFABRIK - OBERNDORF a/n". Bolt with damascened body, long cocking piece, and standard pear shaped knob has typical flag safety, silver inlaid "SAFE" and "READY". Bolt knob has been checkered in two panels. Action retains two stage single trigger. Drop box bottom metal has hinged floorplate retained by release in bow with normal protruding button removed and hole drilled for use of bullet tip in opening. Lightly marbled and figured dense European walnut stock measures 13-1/2" over leather faced Silver type pad, and features classic small beaded cheekpiece (as often done by Seymour Griffin), horn grip cap and forend tip. Checkering is of classic Griffin & Howe point pattern with mullered borders. It is interesting to note that this early rifle has no recoil bolt through stock. According to Mike Petrov in CUSTOM GUNMAKERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, there are a number of G&H rifles with the SN "20" as a number could be assigned to each individual caliber, at the time this rifle was made. Drop at heel: approx 3", drop at comb: approx 1-13/16". Cast: Neutral. Weight: 9 lbs. 0 oz. LOP: 13-1/2". CONDITION: Excellent, as lightly and competently refinished. Metal parts retain essentially all of a very fine rust re-blue over a number of light marks and scratches. Wood also shows a fine hand rubbed oil refinish over a number of light scratches and a few dents, which have been raised. Checkering nicely cleaned up. Newer pad is slightly oversized. Bore is excellent, bright, sharp, and shiny throughout. Action is smooth. A fine, early G&H in arguably the best all around caliber ever designed. 50655-7 MGM153 (8,000-10,000)
