"DER AFRIKANER" CUSTOM COMMERCIAL MAUSER BY OLD TIME MAUSER GURU LESTER WOMACK. LESTER WOMACK CUSTOM MAUSER BOLT RIFLE 104596 458 WM MODERN; C&R Cal. 458 Win Mag. Lester Womack wrote one of the first books pertaining to commercial Mauser rifles, and undoubtedly came up with this fine custom rifle as his ideal for an African safari or a professional hunter, chambered in a cartridge found throughout the safari hunting areas of Africa. In its modern loading it has earned a stellar reputation. This rifle has 21" tapered, octagon bbl with integral matted rib fitted with one standing, three folding express rear sight with gold lines with leaves marked for 100, 200, and 300 yards. Center portion is slightly milled away forming shallow ramp holding large front bead which is covered by sight protector. Sling eye is also milled integral with bbl, and rear portion of bbl is stamped "WOMACK" in classic Mauser type logo, which is over caliber. Rear portion of rib is engraved "DER AFRIKANER". Standard length commercial Mauser 98 action with checkered top receiver ring, BUG proofs on left side, is marked with Mauser name and address on side wall. Unaltered commercial bolt with pear-shaped knob has long cocking piece and standard flag safety. Rifle is fitted with two stage single trigger. It appears that this action was originally made for the 10.5 x 68 cartridge, with wide magazine box and follower, ideal for short magnum cartridges. Bottom metal has hinged floorplate with release button in trigger guard bow. Well figured, dense, American walnut trap steel capped pistol grip stock measures 14-1/2" over partially leather covered Silver type pad, and features right hand cheekpiece, point pattern checkering, reinforcing bolt, and slight schnabel. Drop at heel: approx 2-1/8", drop at comb: approx 1-3/4". Cast: neutral. Weight: 8 lbs. 6 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". CONDITION: Excellent, as custom finished, retaining nearly all of its well done finishes on wood and metal. Bore is excellent. Action is smooth.
