LOVELY OLD BOSS SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES.BOSSSXS639412GAMODERN; C&R(ca 1913) Cal. 12 ga. 29" Chopper lump steel bbls are engraved "Boss & Co, 13, Dover Street, Piccadilly, London. W" on narrow, swamped game rib. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1-1/8 oz of shot and 2-1/2" chambers, and later Birmingham re-proofs for 2-3/4' chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN. Case hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences and features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved in Boss house style with full coverage rose and scroll incorporating 19 rose bouquets in the style of, and most likely executed by, Jack Sumner. "Boss & Co" is in scrolling riband on the front portion of each lockplate, and over "PATENT" on bottom of action. Blued and scroll engraved single beaded trigger guard has SN in relief on tang. Nicely streaked and lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15" over old brown leather covered pad. Stock features typical drop points and flat top point pattern checkering with mullered borders, as well as a small gold oval on toe line engraved "JRC". Matching splinter forend has Anson release and is fitted with Boss's excellent and renowned ejector system. Bore diameter: left -.729, right - .729. Bore restrictions: left - .011 (lt mod), right - .008 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .026, right - .024. Drop at heel: 2-1/4", drop at comb: 1-1/2". Cast off approx 1/2". Weight: 6 lbs. 12 oz. LOP: 15". Makers oak and leather case with brass corners is embossed "R. I. B." on top, and has relatively new green canvas trimmed outer cover. Case has some parcel post stamps affixed to top. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and has large paper Boss label in lid. Label is originally printed with St. James's Street address, which has been lined out in red, with two stamps at upper corners stating "PLEASE NOTE THE NEW ADDRESS, 13, DOVER STREET PICCADILLY." Also on the lid is a small label regarding re-cocking of ejector hammers. Case contains a 2-pc brass and rosewood cleaning rod with short handle, pair of Boss marked snap caps, square oil bottle, bench cloth, and two keys. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain over 95% of a fine quality re-black, engraving still sharp and clear. Action and lockplates retain 60 - 70% orig case hardening color, silvered on bottom, beads, and fences from normal hand wear. Top lever is silvered on thumbpiece. Trigger guard is silvered on sharp edges and bead, considerably so at grip. Stocks retain nearly all of a good quality hand rubbed oil finish, sharp edges preserved, checkering nicely freshened. Bores are excellent, nearly perfect, with one or two very minor shallow spots in right bbl toward breech end. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather has considerably darkened and has a number of rubs and scuffs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is fine with some insect damage at edges in lid, with compressions and soiling. Partitions are tight. Label is excellent, lightly foxed overall with a small rub through from contact with fence. Small ejector label has some soiling. Accessories are good. A fine classic Boss that measures well in all respects. 50430-1 mgm44 (28,000-48,000)
