Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs, choke, and bbl makers initials "AP" (unknown). Tube nos. "31332" and "31333" are on loop. Case hardened, Beesley patent, self-opening sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers, arrowhead engraved tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with well cut Purdey house style rose and scroll. "J. Purdey & Sons" is at the bottom of each lockplate. Bottom of action is marked "Purdey's Patent". Trigger guard with open scroll on bow has SN on tang. Lightly figured and marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/4" over Silver type pad, and features typical drop points, point pattern checkering and a silver oval on toe line engraved "ES" (?). Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Actioners initials "J.T" (Joe Thompson) are stamped on iron. Bore diameter: left -.722, right - .722. Orig makers oak and leather case with brass corners and central medallion, is lined in scarlet cloth, and has small paper Purdey label in lid along with charge card for this particular gun. Case contains 2-pc mahogany and brass cleaning rod with short handle with Turks head, jag and brush in morocco leather wallet, another wallet containing pull-through cleaning kit, and covered compartment holds a pair of Purdey marked snap caps, and a broken case extractor. CONDITION: Excellent, except for cut bbls. Bbls retain over 85% orig blue with some scuffs and marks. Action and lockplates retain well over 85% of their orig case hardening color. Trigger guard is somewhat silvered on edges and grip. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with deep gouges and dents on bottom right at rear of checkering, and some other light marks overall. Pad is relatively recent replacement. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Drop is good. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is considerably deteriorated and dark, appears to have been conserved a long time ago with shellac. Interior is very fine with compressions. Accessories are fine. A fine gun whose usefulness could be improved with the addition of thin wall choke tubes. 50962-2 MGM269 (12,500-22,500)
