FINE OLD "BEST QUALITY" BUT PLAIN FINISH PURDEY SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH EXTRA BARRELS AND CASE.PURDEYSXS1908112 GAMODERN; C&R(1907) Cal. 12 ga. 2-3/4" Chambers. 28" and 30" Chopper lump bbls with narrow, matted game ribs, are engraved with Purdey's Audley House London address and Whitworth steel information on tops. This gun is number 4 in the orig owners battery, and "4" is inlaid in gold on rear portion of each rib, top lever, and on forend tip. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1-1/8 oz of shot. Bbl makers initials "SS" (Sam Simons) are on bottoms of left bbls. SNs are on each bbl. Tube numbers "40558" and "40559" are on 30" bbls; "34961" and "34962" are on 28" bbls. Case hardened Beasley self-opening action features automatic safety, bushed strikers, arrowhead engraved tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with simple geometric borders, with makers name on each lockplate, and "Purdey's Patent" on bottom of action. Blued trigger guard has SN on short, rounded tang. Nicely fiddle figured and well streaked European walnut straight grip (likely altered from pistol grip) buttstock measures 14-1/2" over leather faced Silver type pad. Stock features standard drop points and checkering. The initial "E" in gold is inlet on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend with Anson release, is stamped with actioners initials "AF" (Alf Fullalove) on iron. 28" BBLS: Bore diameter: left -.732, right - .735. Bore restrictions: left - .013 (mod), right - .006 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .022, right - .019. Drop at heel: 2-3/8", drop at comb: 1-1/2". Neutral cast. Weight: 6 lbs. 7 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". 30" BBLS: Bore diameter: left -.733, right - .734. Bore restrictions: left - .021 (mod), right - .008 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .026, right - .026. Drop at heel: 2-3/8", drop at comb: 1-1/2". Weight: 6 lbs.9 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". Quite possibly orig makers oak and leather two gun case with shaped brass corners and circular central medallion, is lined in burgundy cloth, and has what appears to be orig charge card for this gun, as well as small Purdey label, in lid. Case contains pair of Purdey marked snap caps, bone striker bottle with spare strikers, two horn handled turnscrews, horn handled striker key, ebony wad rammer, broken case extractor, and cleaning equipment including 2-pc walnut and brass cleaning rod with short handle, and various mops and brushes. Also included is the orig key. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain nearly all of a fine re-black. Action retains approx 50% orig case hardening color, vivid where protected. Lockplates retain 60 - 70% of their color, fading and silvering toward tails. Trigger guard is re-blued. Stocks retain most of an old oil finish with numerous marks and scratches. Checkering worn. Checkering of butt does not match forend. Bores are excellent, with a hint of frosting. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Drop is good. Case leather is fine, beginning to darken, with top grain rubbed through on edges, and numerous marks. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is fine, with normal rubs and soiling from contact with gun and bbls. Labels are very fine, slightly foxed. Accessories are fine. A lovely old understated Purdey. 50287-1 mgm5 (10,000-20,000)
