PAIR OF E.J. CHURCHILL "FIELD" GRADE SIDELOCK EJECTOR XXV GAME GUNS WITH CASE.CHURCHILLSXS FIELD SIDELOCK6071/607212GAMODERN; C&R(ca 1938) Cal. 12 ga. 2-1/2" Chambers. The "Field" sidelock gun was third in quality after the "Premiere" and "Imperial", and retailed for 60 pounds in 1934. They were well appointed and serviceable guns. This pair is fitted with 25" "XXV" dovetailed bbls with Churchill ribs. They were built as a true pair, with numerals "1" or "2" inlaid in gold on rear portions of ribs, top levers, and forend tips. Tops of bbls are engraved with Churchill name and Orange Street address. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Sidelock actions are stocked to the fences and feature automatic safeties (SAFE inlaid in gold), and dbl triggers. They are engraved with 80% coverage very well cut shaded scroll with rose bouquet highlights. "E. J. Churchill" is on each lockplate, and bottoms of actions are engraved "Field" "XXV" (in gold) and "Model". Matching trigger guards have SNs at grips. Well matched, nicely streaked, and finely flame figured European walnut straight grip buttstocks measure 14-3/4" over ribbed horn buttplates, and feature typical drop points and point pattern checkering. Silver ovals on toe lines are engraved "RBA". Matching splinter ejector forends have Anson releases. Gun no. "1": Bore diameter: left -.729, right - .729. Bore restrictions: left - .023 (mod), right - .012 (lt mod). Wall thickness: left - .027, right - .028. Drop at heel: 2-5/16", drop at comb: 1-1/2". Cast off approx 1/2". Weight: 6 lbs. 2 oz. LOP: 14-3/4". Gun no. "2": Bore diameter: left -.729, right - .729. Bore restrictions: left - .023 (mod), right - .012 (lt mod). Wall thickness: left - .026, right - .027. Drop at heel: 2-5/16", drop at comb: 1-1/2". Cast off approx 1/2". Weight: 6 lbs. 2 oz. LOP: 14-3/4". Newly made high quality English leather two-gun motor case with stitched leather corners is gold embossed "ROBERT B. ARTHUR". Case has outer cover of purple canvas with leather trim, with same embossing on label. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth, and has old Churchill gold embossed label in lid. PROVENANCE: Factory ledger page with specifications. CONDITION: Excellent, as refurbished. Bbls retain nearly all of a London quality re-black over some light marks, engraving slightly softened. Actions have been coin finished, most engraving clear, some considerably softened, especially on trigger plates. Stocks have been nicely refinished, checkering re-cut. Mechanically, guns appear to be in top knick, with excellent bores, tight actions. Strong ejectors. Case leather has some lifting of grain on top. Outer cover is fine with some rubs. Interior cloth is excellent. Old label is fine, but a bit lumpy. Undoubtedly a great pair of shooting guns. 50623-9 mgm24 (10,000-16,000)
