SUPERB COGSWELL & HARRISON "EXTRA QUALITY VICTOR EJECTOR" ORIGINAL 3" CHAMBER HEAVY GAME GUN WITH GAME SCENE ENGRAVING BY HARRY KELL.COGSWELL & HARRISONSxS6338412GAMODERN; C&R(ca 1952) Cal. 12 ga. 3" Chambers. 30" Chopper lump bbls are fitted with matted, swamped game rib, and are engraved "Cogswell & Harrison Ltd" and "168 Piccadilly. London. W" on tops. Bbl flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 3" chambers and 1-1/2 oz of shot. A small sling loop is soldered to bottom rib, and appears to be orig. Case hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences and features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), side clips, C&H rendition of Holland type detachable locks, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with near full coverage very well cut shaded open scroll and acanthus with strap work highlights surrounding vignette of pair of resting pheasant on bottom of action. Lockplates with scroll surrounding makers name on scrolled riband on fronts, have scenes of three grouse at rest in hilly environment on left plate, and possibly the same trio taking wing on right. Single beaded trigger guard with more scroll on bow, has SN in relief on tang. This fine engraving is most likely by the revered Harry Kell, as the details and layout of scroll and his treatment of backgrounds and the birds, especially their eyes, are essentially his signature. Finely marbled and nicely figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/4" over ribbed horn buttplate, and features nicely shaped drop points, semi diamond hand with well cut point pattern checkering. Toe line is shaped with negative camber giving racy look, and is fitted with sling loop matching that on bbl, as well as a vacant gold oval. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.727, right - .727. Bore restrictions: left - .034 (full), right - .020 (mod). Wall thickness: left - .032, right - .032. Drop at heel: 2-5/8", drop at comb: 1-7/16". Cast: approx 1/4" off. Weight: 7 lbs. 6 oz. LOP: 14-1/4". CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Bbls retain nearly all of a re-black over light scattered marks and frosting. Action retains 80%+ of what appears to be orig case hardening color, silvered on fences and beads. Lockplates retain over 90% of their color. Blue on top lever is slightly silvered on thumbpiece. Trigger plate retains nearly all of its blue, and blue of trigger guard is thinned a bit on bow, and considerably silvered at grip. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their orig hand rubbed oil finish with some oil rubbed in as maintenance with a number of light marks and scratches. Checkering is lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is a hint loose at hinge. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are strong and slightly out of time. An unusual, well made "Coggie", top of the line, and embellished by an acknowledged master. 51076-3 MGM273 (7,000-10,000)
