MASSIVE STEPHEN GRANT EIGHT BORE HAMMER WATER-FOWLING GUN WITH CASE.STEPHEN GRANTSXS33718 BORE(1873) Cal. 8 bore. 3-1/4" Chambers. 34" Fine Damascus bbls are engraved "Stephen Grant 67A St. James's Street. London" on slightly raised, concave game rib. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 8 bore. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs. Robust, round bodied, case hardened, Jones underlever action with dbl triggers (front spring-loaded and "loose" trigger: This is a technical term often used by the gun trade to denote a trigger with webs cutaway to allow forward movement of the trigger, which reduces injury to your trigger finger from recoil. This is a similar but different technique than that involved in the making of an articulated or hinged trigger.) is fitted with peninsula non-rebounding back locks with round bodied serpentine hammers having stylized dolphins heads. Action and locks are engraved with 60% coverage well cut scroll within small scroll borders. "S. Grant" is on each lockplate. SN is on trigger guard tang. Dense, well figured, and nicely marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13-7/8" over steel butt plate with short top spur. Coarsely spaced point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip. Silver oval on toe line is engraved with monogram "PL" (?). Matching splinter forend with shaped and engraved steel tip, attaches to bbl with captive side nail through shaped oval steel escutcheons. Bore diameter: left -.923, right - .923. Bore restrictions: left - .000 (cyl), right - .010 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .030, right - .040. Drop at heel: 2-15/16", drop at comb: 1-13/16". Cast: very slightly off. Weight: 12 lbs. 3 oz. LOP: 13-7/8". Old, possibly orig, oak and leather case with brass corners, is lined in blue cloth, and has reproduction Grant paper label in lid. CONDITION: Fine, as partially finished. Bbls retain nearly all of a good quality brown, with excellent definition to pattern. Action retains approx 60% orig case hardening color, strong where protected, thinning and silvering on normal wear points. Lockplates and hammers retain most of their color with some staining on left hammer. Stocks retain nearly all of a hand rubbed oil finish over numerous marks and light dings, grain still open, checkering lightly freshened. Bores are excellent, lightly frosted toward breech ends. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Case leather is quite dark with numerous scrapes and rubs. Straps are fair, renewed handle is good. New interior cloth is excellent with some light rubs. A scarce "best" quality big bore with good dimensions. 50730-4 mgm80 (12,500-17,500)
