FINE DOUBLE PERCUSSION SHOTGUN BY LEPAGE OF PARIS.LEPAGESXS PERCUSSION169714 GACal. 14 ga. (.690 Bore diameter) 31" Beautifully deep full length flute filed, etched high quality silver Damascus bbls have slightly raised rib filed to match, which is gold inlaid "LePage a Paris" (most likely John Andre Prosper LePage working 1792-1854) and flanked by inlaid silver scrolled devices. These similar devices appear at breech ends, within the beads of the flutes. These beads extend onto patent breeches where they terminate in arcaded circular stops. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with Belgian proofs, left bbl with SN. Breech iron with integral fences has long tang and is engraved with attenuated open scroll and gold inlaid with relief flying bird. Back locks with pivoting safeties that intercept breasts of round bodied hammers at half cock, have fancy filed borders. Locks are engraved with more open scroll surrounding vignettes of gold inlaid hunting scenes; pair of setters (?) approaching a running bird on left, and with possibly the same dogs pointing a pair of birds, one on the ground, the other flushing, on right. Fancy scroll filed trigger guard with gold inlaid running stag on bow, has scrolled horn grip extension and intricately outlined finial matching thimble. Relatively plain but dense European walnut straight grip stock measures 13-5/8" over steel buttplate, with long spur; scroll engraved and inlaid with a gold pheasant. In place of checkering, grip area is relief carved in leaf and twig motif. Stock also features a large sling loop on toe line which matches that on ramrod pipe, as well as a right hand cheekpiece. Stock attaches to bbl with captive side nail through shaped steel escutcheons. Rosewood ramrod with tulip shaped brass head and brass tail mounts through two plain pipes. PROVENANCE: Consignors notes. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls cleaned to bright silver with some scattered brown spots. All other iron parts are a silver to pewter gray patina. Stock retains most of its possibly orig French polish with a number of marks and dents. Bores are very good, with scattered pits. Locks are crisp.
