EARLY MERKEL STYLE PIOTTI OVER-UNDER SKEET GUN SPECIALLY BUILT FOR KONRAD WIRNHIER OF GERMANY, GOLD MEDAL WINNER IN SKEET COMPETITION AT 1972 OLYMPICS.PIOTTIOU SKEET GUN476912GAMODERN; C&R(1959) Cal. 12 ga. 3" Chambers. 27-1/2" Mono-bloc bbls with center line matted broad ventilated rib are engraved "Wirnhier Spezial Skeet 68" on top left. Bottom of mono-bloc is marked with 1959 Italian nitro proofs for 2-3/4" chambers. Coin finished early Piotti Merkel type OU action features non-automatic safety (SIGURA engraved), dbl Kersten top fastener, H&H style hand detachable sidelocks, and single non-selective trigger. Action is engraved with full coverage large open acanthus scroll with floral highlights. Blued top lever has pierced thumbpiece. Trigger guard has SN at grip. Well marbled and lightly figured European walnut rosewood capped pistol grip Monte Carlo buttstock measures 14-1/2" over black Decelerator pad. Closely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip. A vacant gold oval is at rear of toe line. Matching 3-pc ejector forend has Deeley release. Bore diameter: top -.729 flared, bottom - .731 flared. Wall thickness: top - .020, bottom - .026. Drop at heel: 2-15/16", drop at rear of Monte Carlo: 2-3/8", drop at comb: 1-5/8". Cast: approx 1/8" off. Weight: 7 lbs. 12 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". Gun is housed in an old Gun Guard plastic case with owners name "C. E. Ward" on aluminum plate under handle. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain nearly all of what appears to be a good quality re-blue, engraving softened. Coin finish of action is still bright. Stocks retain nearly all of what appears to be an old oil refinish, checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is a bit loose when opened, tight with bbls on face when closed. "Under" ejector is "live". Trigger seems to work. Forend latch is bent out, and needs attention before much shooting is done. Case is good. 51050-1 MGM265 (4,000-7,000)
