IMPORTANT A. H. FOX "SUPER FOX" "HE" SHIPPED IN 1924 TO E. C. CROSSMAN, NOTED GUN WRITER.A. H. FOXSXS HE2830412GAMODERN; C&R(1924) Cal. 12 ga. 2-15/16" Chambers(Actual measure) factory records state 2-3/4". 32" Bbls with slightly raised, narrow, matted, concave rib mounted with two steel beads, are marked "CHROMOX FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL" and "MADE BY A H FOX Co. PHILA, PA, U.S.A." on tops. Bbl flats are stamped "H" with SN, and "BARRELS NOT GUARANTEED – SEE TAG". Robust, blued action is stamped with SN and "H" on water table, and features automatic safety, double triggers, and standard non-rebated frame. Action is engraved with line and foliate borders. "ANSLEY H. FOX" is on each side. SN is on trigger guard tang. Lightly fiddle figured American walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/4" over Silver type pad, and features typical point pattern checkering at grip. Matching splinter ejector forend has Fox's Deeley type release. Bore diameter: left-.746, right -.747. (Becker bored guns are usually .008 – .010 oversize) Bore restrictions: left -.049 (Full), right -.049 (Full). Gun was specified with full and full chokes. Wall thickness: left -.039, right -.042. Drop at heel: 2-11/16", drop at comb: 1-1/2". Cast: neutral. Weight: 9 lbs. 5 oz. LOP: 14-1/4". This gun was known to Michael McIntosh and is discussed in his book "A. H. FOX THE FINEST GUN IN THE WORLD", on pages 220 and 221. Fox gun #28304 was Crossman's second Super-Fox after his first, #27822, was returned to the factory for unimpressive patterning results. Crossman found much to praise in this second gun and stated "I should characterize this 2 3/4" Beckerized Fox as the best shooting 12 boreI have ever tried, and the most useful". PROVENANCE: Callahan letter with specifications for this gun, and indicating that it was shipped Feb 27, 1924 to E. C. Crossman. Consignor states: Crossman states in his book that gun was put together by Becker. It is known that Crossman and Becker worked closely on the Super-Fox project and these bbl measurements are certainly of Becker type. Also included is considerable information on E. C. Crossman, as well as the civilian marksmanship program and copies of Double Gun BBS discussion on Crossman. CONDITION: Very good, as refinished. Bbls retain 50 - 60% of an old re-black. Action has been blued and has subsequently silvered to about 80%, engraving slightly softened. Stocks lightly sanded and refinished with oil, slightly rounded at juncture with metal, checkering considerably worn. Action is tight. Bores are very fine with some scattered light pitting and frosting. Ejectors are strong and in time. There is a negligible ding at the top of left bbl 10" from muzzle. Stocks appear sound. Shotgun in accompanied by its old Silvers pad which is squished. 50638-1 MGM219 (25,000-35,000)
