RARE, HIGH ORIGINAL CONDITION 28 GAUGE ITHACA GRADE "2" NID SHOTGUN WITH SINGLE TRIGGER.ITHACASXS NID 246686628 GAMODERN; C&RCal. 28 ga. 2-7/8" Chambers. Any Ithaca 28 ga NID shotgun in good condition is scarce, with a total production of fewer than 500 guns. It is estimated that 58 of these were made in no. 2 grade. This high original condition gun is very unusual, and has 26" bbls with matted game rib. Bbl flats are stamped with SN, grade, and "2-7/8 CHAMBERS" with choke marks "2" and "4". Small frame, case hardened NID action is fitted with single selective trigger, with selector on tang. Action is engraved in typical "Grade 2" style, with 30% coverage large acanthus. This engraving offsets scenes of birds on sides; standing quail under "ITHACA GUN CO" on left, and a standing snipe under "ITHACA, N.Y." on right. Blued trigger guard with acanthus on bow has SN on tang. Nicely crotch figured American walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 13-1/4" over ribbed composition buttplate. Fancy backed point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend has inset ebony tip and J-spring release. Bore diameter: left -.547, right - .549. Bore restrictions: left - .042 (full), right - .008 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .028, right - .026. Drop at heel: 2-5/8", drop at comb: 1-9/16". Cast: Neutral. Weight: 5 lbs. 13 oz. LOP: 13-1/4". CONDITION: Excellent, original, as found. Bbls retain over 95% lustrous orig blue with a few slight marks and thinned a bit on sides. Action retains nearly all of its orig case hardening color, silvered on fences and sharp edges, thinned a bit on bottom with some light flecking. Blue of trigger guard and forend iron is excellent with only a hint of silvering. Stocks retain nearly all of their orig light varnish, with a few light marks and scratches. Checkering darkened. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Trigger works. This scarce little small bore Ithaca would make a delightful quail gun. 50738-1 MGM138 (10,000-15,000)
