RARE AND FINE ALL METAL NURNBERG WHEEL LOCK CAVALRY PISTOL USED BY THE VENETIAN REPUBLIC, CIRCA 1580. GERMAN ALL METAL WHEELOCK NSN 15MM Cal. 15mm. 14" overall, with 8-1/2" oct-rnd swamped bbl, with Nurnberg proof and makers mark with unicorn on top bbl flat. Lock is marked "GB" below a bird with another indiscernible proof, not found in Stockel. According to consignor, there are 14 identical pistols in the "Armeria of the Palazzo Ducale" in Venice. A belt hook acts as the rear lockplate screw escutcheon. Belt hook is 7-3/4" long. Round portion of bbl is florally engraved as is pan cover and cock is engraved in the shape of the head of a beast. Gun appears orig, complete and fine condition. PROVENANCE: Private Lifetime Collection Of A Noted Scholar And Authority. CONDITION: Very good-fine overall. Metal is fairly smooth, grey/bright overall with light scattered areas of staining and pitting.
