FINE AND ELEGANT CIRCA 1770 BRITISH LONG FLINTLOCK FOWLER.BRITISHF/L FOWLERNSN80Cal. 80. This beautiful well made and finely preserved "market hunter" is just over six feet, with 57" heavy breeched, slightly swamped bbl with teardrop shaped silver blade front sight. Top flat of bbl "ST. ALBANS", left side of breech has commercial London proofs. Lock sign "I / DEYKIN", for (J)ohn (Daykin), Nottingham 1760-75. Brass furniture with engraved oval thumbplate inscribed "G F WILLEY". Buttplate tang is scroll engraved with pheasant, three screw lock escutcheon plate has matching engraving as does rear ramrod thimble and trigger guard which terminates in acorn finial. English walnut stock has raised clamshell molding rear of breech. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Iron has dark patina mostly smooth with staining and light pitting. There is light pitting around bolster and slight burn to wood just forward and rear of pan as expected. Markings all discernible as can be seen in photos. Stock is sound and solid with a couple of small hairlines which do not affect aesthetics. Swelled wood ramrod appears orig to time of use. Brass overall has a light mustard patina. Mechanically fine with clean smooth bore. This is a very elegant "as found" all orig 18th century long Fowler without issue and fine surface. 51763-1 JS (4,500-7,500)
