PAIR OF STEPHEN GRANT SIDELOCK EJECTOR TOP LEVER GAME SHOTGUNS WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES.STEPHEN GRANTSLE6224/622312GA(1891) Cal. 12 ga. 2-3/4" Chambers. 28" Dovetailed steel bbls are engraved "Stephen Grant & Sons 67A St. James's Street London" on flat slightly raised ribs. Guns are a true pair with nos "1" and "2" gold inlaid on bbls, trigger guard tangs, and forend tips. Rear portions of ribs are also engraved "Patent Ejector". Tops of bbls are engraved "Sir Joseph Whitworth's" "Fluid Pressed Steel". Bbl flats are stamped with London provisional proofs and Birmingham nitro re-proofs for 2-3/4" chambers. SNs are on bottoms of bbls. Coin finished sidelock actions are stocked to the fences and feature bushed strikers and dbl triggers. Actions are filed and engraved in Grant house style with graceful fluted fences and 80% coverage very well cut small scroll. "Stephen Grant & Sons" is on the bottom of each lockplate. Blued and scroll engraved trigger guards have SNs on tangs. European walnut buttstocks are not well matched, with stock of "1" most likely being a re-stock, with lightly streaked walnut. Gun "2" has stock of very nicely figured and marbled walnut. Stocks measure 14-5/8" over brown leather covered pads, and feature semi-diamond hands, drop points and standard point pattern checkering. Silver ovals on toe lines are engraved "T J B". Matching splinter forends with ejector housings on irons, have Anson releases. Gun "1": Bore diameter: left -.732, right - .731. Bore restrictions: left - .005 (IC), right - .001 (cyl). Wall thickness: left - .024, right - .025. Drop at heel: 1-3/4", drop at comb: 1-7/16". Cast about 1/2" off. Weight: 6 lbs. 10 oz. LOP: 14-5/8". Gun "2": Bore diameter: left -.731, right - .731. Bore restrictions: left - .007 (IC), right - .002 (cyl). Wall thickness: left - .025, right - .026. Drop at heel: 1-15/16", drop at comb: 1-7/16". Cast is about 1/4" off. Weight: 6 lbs. 8 oz. LOP: 14-5/8". Makers two gun oak and leather case, possibly orig, has brass corners and a large new central leather rectangle set into lid, with magic marker initials "T J B". Interior is lined in royal blue baize, and has large paper Grant label in lid. Case contains two pairs of Grant marked snap caps, ebony and brass 2-pc cleaning rod with short handle, Hawksley 12 bore broken case remover, small round pewter oil bottle, bone striker bottle with two spare strikers, bone handled cleaning brush, and a celluloid chop stick. Also included are some cleaning brushes and a new rosewood handled turnscrew. CONDITION: Very good to fine, as refinished. Bbls retain approx 90% of an old re-black with some scattered light pits, and silvering. Actions are cleaned to coin finish. Top levers, trigger plates and trigger guards re-blued and retain most of that blue. New stock on Gun "1" retains nearly all of its orig finish with some added oil. Top right horn of stock flexes. Gun "2" has an old refinish with subsequent added oil. Forends show some slight wear. Bores are very fine, shiny, with some scattered pitting, mostly in right bbl of gun "2". Actions are tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Pads are relatively new. Case leather is very dark, considerably scuffed and dented. Straps are missing. Handle detached. Interior cloth is good. Label is darkly foxed and has some rubs through, as well as ball point pen address. Accessories are generally good. 51698-1 MGM120 (15,000-20,000)
