FINE HOLLAND & HOLLAND 8 BORE BALL AND SHOT DOUBLE HAMMER GUN WITH TEN ROUNDS OF AMMO. HOLLAND & HOLLAND SIDE BY SIDE 7457 8 GA (1883) Cal. 8 bore. 26-1/8" Fine Damascus bbls have raised, concave rib with dolls head extension. Rib is fitted with single folding leaf express rear sight which nestles into rib well when folded. Rib is engraved "HOLLAND & HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND ST. LONDON". Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 9 bore, bottoms of bbls with SNs. Massive, case hardened, Jones underlever, round bodied action has top strap which extends over comb, and is fitted with peninsula rebounding back action locks with tall round bodied serpentine hammers and front sliding safeties, which engage with hammers in rebounded position. Left side of action is engraved "CHARGE 8 TO 10 DRAMS CASE 3-1/4 INCHES". Lockplates are gold inlaid "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" and are engraved with medium simple scroll. This scroll engraving is also on trigger guard bow. Tang, engraved with SN, extends to horn grip cap. Lightly marbled and slightly stump figured European walnut full capped pistol grip buttstock measures 13-3/4" over Silver type pad. Closely spaced point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching short splinter forend has pivoting lever release. Bore diameter: left -.843, right -.843. Bore restrictions: left -.011 (.015 recess - full), right -.011 (IC). Drop at heel: 2-11/16", drop at comb: 1-3/4". Weight: 14 lbs 0 oz. LOP: 13-3/4". Also included are ten 8 bore brass cartridges that appear to be loaded with round ball. PROVENANCE: Ammo. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refurbished. Bbls retain most of what appears to be their orig brown, with good Damascus pattern. Action and locks have been nicely re-colored, and retain nearly all of that color. Engraving on locks and trigger guard bow appear to be out of period and style with gun. Stocks retain nearly all of a well done hand rubbed oil finish, checkering re-cut. Pad undoubtedly new at time of refinish. Bores are excellent. Action is very tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Safeties work. These heavy Holland shotguns were preferred at close quarters by many dangerous game hunters for their somewhat lighter weight than a corresponding rifle, as well as their ability to effectively use a shot charge for other game. Cartridges are excellent. 51432-2 MGM77 (15,000-22,500)
