VERY FINE AND RARE ISLAND LOCK UNDERLEVER HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE BY HENRY ATKIN WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES.HENRY ATKINSxS rifle400450 3 1/4Cal. .450 3-1/4" BPE. 28" Dovetailed steel bbls are engraved "Henry Atkin (From Purdeys) 18 Oxendon Street Haymarket. London." on full length rib mounted with one standing, three nested leaf express rear sight and silver bead front. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Bottoms of bbls with SN. A sling eye is soldered to bottom rib. Round bodied case hardened Jones underlever action fitted with side clips, and dbl triggers, is mounted with "island" back action rebounding locks having round bodied serpentine hammers and front sliding safeties. Action and locks are engraved with near full coverage very well cut small scroll. "HENRY ATKIN" is in scrolled riband on each lockplate. Steel trigger guard has SN on tang which has checkered spur forming grip. Well figured and lightly streaked European walnut buttstock measures 14-1/2" over checkered steel buttplate, and features nicely shaped shadow line beaded cheekpiece, classic point pattern checkering at grip, and a sling eye along with a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Drop at heel: approx 2-5/16", drop at comb: approx 1-3/4". Weight: 8 lbs. 5 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". What appears to be orig makers oak and leather case with brass corners and circular central medallion is embossed "A. W. M." on top with Old Highland Railway shipping label (address "via Lockerbee). Interior is lined in scarlet cloth with gold embossed black leather Atkin label in lid with Jermyn Street address. Rifle fits case perfectly. Accessories include 2-pc Greenfield patent brass cleaning rod, Greenfield improved .450 mold with two hollow pointing pins, ebony handled turnscrew, powder measure, nipple key, and wad rammer, dusting brush, horn handled chamber brush by Hawksley, 450 Hawksley bullet crimper, and a screw type capper/ decapper. Also included is a square oil bottle and a box of 5 Kynoch 450 BPE cartridges. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Bbls retain nearly all of an old best re-black over some scattered light dings. Action and locks retain 70 - 80% orig case hardening color. Stocks retain nearly all of an old oil refinish over some old marks, checkering somewhat worn, caked with oil, and has not been re-cut. Bores are very fine with some scattered pitting, mostly at breech end of right bbl. Action is tight. Locks are crisp. Safeties work. Case leather is good, darkening with many stains, marks and rubs. Interior cloth is fine, with rubs and compressions. Straps and handle are good. Accessories are good to fine. A lovely old deer stalking rifle. Rifles by Henry Atkin are very scarce, as he was predominantly a maker of best double shotguns. 51760-3 MGM150 (7,500-12,500)
