CUSTOM MAGNUM MAUSER SPORTING RIFLE WITH SCOPE, MADE FOR ELMER KEITH BY HENRIKSEN USING A HALGER ACTION, AND DOCUMENTED IN HIS BOOKS. MAUSER BOLT RIFLE 93048 .338 WIN MAG MODERN; C&R (on bottom of action, stock must be removed to view) Cal. .338 Win Mag. 24" Lightweight tapered round bbl is marked "HENRIKSEN" around top of breech end, and is fitted with banded-on secondary stock attachment and Redfield ramp with sourdough bead. Caliber is at left rear. Case hardened, magnum length, square bridge Mauser action is engraved "Halger No 85" on side wall (Halger of Kiel made a small number of very high quality custom rifles in high intensity cartridges during the late '20's and early '30's). Action is fitted with Buhler bases. Bolt has had knob lowered to clear scope, and a Buhler safety has been installed. Bottom metal is fitted with single set trigger. Hinged floorplate is retained by button in trigger guard bow. Custom stock also by Henriksen, with initials "IH" stamped in inletting under receiver ring, is of nicely fiddle figured, dense, American walnut very similar to another Henriksen rifle made for Keith sold by this auction company in March '15 as lot 1061. It shows the same styling and raised oval on right side of grip, relief engraved with "K", as Elmer's take on the Wundhammer swell. Stock features NOSHOK pad, Keith designed swept cheekpiece with roll over to comb, asymmetrical bordered checkering, horn grip cap, and schnabeled forend. Unmarked but fairly high quality scope of about 4 X has dual horizontal crosshair reticle, and is in Buhler rings. Weight with scope: 9 lbs. 11 oz. LOP: 13-3/16". PROVENANCE: Consignor states that her uncle hunted with Elmer Keith in Alaska and bought this rifle from him. And that it is pictured in some of Keith's books. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining nearly all of its custom blue on bbl, and what appears to be orig finish on stock, with some light handling marks on both. Action retains a considerable amount, probably over 50% of its orig mottled French gray finish. 70% Bright blue remains on bolt stop and floorplate release button. Bore appears to be excellent. Action is smooth. Scope is excellent, optically clear. A fine rifle owned by an iconic gun writer. 51066-1 MGM301 (6,000-10,000)
