SUPER RARE WALTHER 9MM ULTRA PROTOTYPE SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. WALTHER PROTOTYPE NSN 9MM ULTRA MODERN; C&R Cal. 9mm Ultra. Extraordinarily rare 9mm Ultra pistol made by Walther to interest the Luftwaffe in a pistol that was more powerful than the 9mm Kurtz but more compact then the P38. The exposed bbl is very similar in profile to a P38, while the balance of gun is reminiscent of the PP, particularly as concerns profile of the slide, hammer and frame. That said, the function is very different as the pistol functions as a locked breech via a rotating bbl and uses a levered arm recoil spring inletted into the left side of the slide. There is no hold-open feature. Push button magazine release. Grips are 2-pc panels, each side cut with a series of vertical serrations and secured to the frame with a single transverse screw. The gun is entirely unmarked with no proofs or SNs. The same applies to the magazine whose left side is drilled with 6 indicator holes and has a detachable floorplate as per a PP. Highly polished salt blue finish except for a fire blued safety lever and the sides of the frame that were later polished bright. This exact pistol is pictured on pg 106 of WALTHER VOLUME III by James L. Rankin, on pg 212 of THE P38 PISTOL, VOLUME III by Warren Buxton, and pg 143 of WALTHER THE DEUTSCHE LEGEND by Manfred Kersten. As the only known example of its type, it could well be the center piece for any advanced Walther collector. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: At least 95% of the orig salt blue finish with the sides of the frame polished to the white as previously noted. There is some dulling and thinning on the grip straps. Grips very good to excellent with a scattering of light handling dings. Same overall condition applies to the salt blued magazine. Bright bore with strong rifling.
