WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH COLOR CASE HARDENED FRAME.WINCHESTER18863571138/56Cal 38-56. Standard grade rifle with 26" oct bbl, full magazine, gold-washed Beach's combination front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight and Lyman tang sight with large eye-piece. Mounted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut with straight stock & crescent buttplate. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle in cal 38-56, oct bbl, plain trigger, received in warehouse Oct 18,1889 and shipped Oct 31, 1889 to order number 4853. Few color case hardened rifles of that era retain today any case colors, especially standard grade rifles. Those rifles were the working mans tool and saw almost daily exposure to the elements. Exposure to sunlight rapidly fades case colors. CONDITION: Fine plus. Bbl retains about 90% thinning orig blue showing sharp edge wear and a small cleaned area on the top left flat. Front sight retains about 70% gold wash. Magazine tube retains 65-70% orig blue and the forend cap silvered case colors. Receiver retains 65-70% orig case colors, moderately faded on the sides & top, turned silver on the bottom. Lever & hammer retain faded case colors. Buttplate is a silver/gray patina with fine pitting around the toe. Stock has a few bruises on the left side, otherwise wood is sound and shows about 60% orig finish on the buttstock & forearm. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Would make an outstanding cowboy action shooter. 51622-1 JRL (3,500-5,000)
