EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE REMINGTON DOUBLE DERINGER TYPE I MODEL 1 EARLY PRODUCTION SERIAL NUMBER 40. REMINGTON DOUBLE DERINGER 40 41RF Cal. .41 RF. 3" bbls, blue finish, 2-pc rosewood grips. This is an example of the extremely rare type I early production variant of the Remington Double Deringer. Elliot's patent is marked on the left bbl rib, right bbl rib is marked "MANUFACTURED BY E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y". SN 40 is stamped on the upper right grip frame under the grip. SN 40 is also stamped on the bottom of the bbl lug. Formerly in the William Lock Collection, and the Elliot Burka Collection. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls show a mottled gray/brown patina overall with hints of blue at the hinge point. Rib markings are sharp and clear. SN is sharp and clear. Bores are dark with traces of rifling. Frame shows a mottled silver/gray patina with some light erosion overall. SN mark is sharp. Hammer shows generous traces of blue finish. Bbl latch and trigger are a smooth gray/blue patina with hints of blue finish. Grips are very good, intact, and show light handling marks overall with nearly all of the varnish finish. This is the rarest variation of the Remington Double Deringer, made in 1866 with an estimated production of under 100 guns. This would be a welcome addition to any Remington Double Deringer Collection. 51641-32 TEP (3,000-4,000)
