EXTREMELY RARE CIVIL WAR SHARPS & HANKINS MODEL 1861 NAVY RIFLE WITH BAYONET.SHARPS & HANKINS1861 NAVY RIFLE38752RFCal. 52RF. This is among the scarcest and rarely seen Civil War Martial arms. 500 of these arms were ordered by the Navy July 29,1861 with saber bayonets at the cost of $36.00 each. We cannot find another of this scarce early war contract offered in auction in the last 10 years. The accompanying bayonet is equally rare and though not matching is only about 80 serial numbers away. 32-3/4" rnd bbl with bayonet lug on bottom of muzzle. Blue and case color finish. Steel mountings, brass buttplate. Right side of frame is marked "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA". Left side of frame is marked "SHARPS PATENT 1859" in 3-lines. 2-pc walnut stocks with sling swivel. SN is marked on upper tang and bottom of bbl at the breech. Bayonet is marked "COLLINS & CO HARTFORD CONN." on one side and "1861" on the other side. SN "304" is stamped on top flat of grip. Bayonet is housed in black leather scabbard with brass throat and tip. PROVENANCE: Long Time Collection of Collector and Museum Owner Charles English, Windsor, New York. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl shows a even grey-brown patina overall that has some slight roughness toward the breech. Sights very good. Receiver is a mottled steel grey patina overall with some roughness. Markings are sharp and clear. SN marks are also sharp and clear. Hammer shows traces of case color. Operating lever is a dark brown patina with some roughness on the bottom. Stocks are very good, slightly undersized and show a coat of old varnish. Buttplate is a mustard yellow patina with dents and scratches overall. Bbl bands are also a dark brown patina. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Bayonet is very good. Brass grip and guard are a plum/yellow patina. Blade is a smooth silver grey patina. Scabbard also is very good, intact.
