HESSEN LINE INFANTRY OFFICER'S HELMET MODEL 1897.

This helmet was originally worn by an officer of the pre-1897 115th LGIR regiment. This helmet was refitted after that date. This was performed when the regiment changed helmet style and trim color in 1897. Now the helmet only has the Hessen gold trimmed lion frontplate. Black lacquered leather body with fine gilt trim. Helmet body in excellent form and firm stitching. Two closed holes for the 1621 banner are evident from the inside of the helmet. Interior has sweat leather and silk head liner. Visors colored. Leather body has matte finish due to age but no cracks or damage. Visors slightly crazed with age. Spike base is equal Hessian style with tall fluted spike. No ornamentation at spike base as is proper for Hessian officers. Rounded gold chinscales with Reichs officers and non-serrated Hessen state cockades. Rare early pattern helmet helmet that was converted for extended use in 1897. SIZE: PROVENANCE: The Doug Buhler Collection of Rare and Spectacular German Imperial Headgear and Pickelhauben.
