FINE SILVER INLAID RAMS-HEAD BUTT SCOTTISH ALL-METAL PISTOL.SCOTTISHHIGHLANDERNSN62Cal. 62. This classic early Scottish pistol was converted from its orig dog log configuration to regular flint by an unknown craftsman who most likely worked in the area around Doune, Scotland, as lockplate has been reworked and lock now sports a fine pierced body cock with classic Doune star behind top spur. 8-1/2" tapered round bbl has a flared octagonal muzzle and usual longitudinal grooves at breech end. All steel stock/ body is filed in classic early 18th century manner with scrolled rams horn butt. Bbl and stock have matching bronze and silver inlays consisting of simple scrolls and bands interspersed with hearts and lozenges. A Christian cross and Stuart rose are on bottom. Hollow silver ball trigger has matching pricker installed in butt. Left side is mounted with long belt hook with fancy pierced sideplate. Reworked lock with unbridled friction frizzen, is engraved with attenuated scroll. No makers name is present. Orig fancy turned all steel ramrod is in long rope filed pipe. PROVENANCE: Gun Report, Dec 1959 with this very pistol on cover with article describing it and other Scottish pistols. CONDITION: Good. All metal parts show even overall pitting, with the exception of lockplate and cock which are only lightly pitted, undoubtedly due to their later reworking. Inlays are considerably toned, and engraving on inlays is somewhat washed. A handsome Scottish pistol. 51481-1 MGM19 (4,000-6,000)
