VERY RARE BAKER VOLUNTEER RIFLE BY HENRY NOCK INCORPORATING HIS PATENT BREECH AND PINLESS LOCK, WITH BAKER BAYONET AND SCABBARD. HENRY NOCK BAKER VOLUNTEER NSN 69 Cal. 69. (7 Groove rifling) 26" Bbl with large bayonet stud mounted at right front, has octagonal breech section marked "H NOCK PATENT" (central ignition). Small sized Nock patent semi-waterproof pinless lock is engraved "H. Nock" on plate. Stock with brass cap extends to within 2" of muzzle and is "slotted" to eliminate plugging of ramrod channel. Other stock mounts are brass, including heavy buttplate with rack no. "32", large patchbox on right side, and trigger guard with bow engraved with what is likely owners name "E Shaw". Leather covered cheek pad has been tacked into comb. Steel ramrod has swell toward tip to engage spring in front ferrule. Rifle is accompanied by orig Baker type bayonet with 22-1/2" blade made by "Beddell & Bate" (?) with cast brass handle. Bayonet has what appears to be its orig scabbard. CONDITION: Good. Bbl cleaned to bright silver to gray. Lock is pewter gray over light pitting. Brass is nicely toned. Stock appears to have had some oil rubbed in over its orig finish at time of installation of cheek pad. Bore is very fine, shiny with a few light pits. Lock is crisp. Bayonet is good, blade cleaned, brass of grip toned. Leather of scabbard considerably crazed with some lifting of grain. Brass tarnished. Brass tip missing. A fine example of this exceptionally scarce British rifle. 51153-1 MGM48 (3,500-5,500)
