MODEL 1777 FRENCH SHORT MUSKET FOR "COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA".FRENCH1777NSN78 CALCal. 78. 54" overall, brass pan and unbridled frizzen. 39" rnd bbl. Gun is totally unmarked with exception of a small "CP" (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania?) brand opposite lock and several small European proofs including "star over D" in small cartouche stamped on bottom of trigger guard along with "Crown over P" and "Crown over C" on buttplate. There are several spurious small "US" surcharges on several parts and spurious small "U States" on reverse of buttstock. Otherwise, gun appears as found though missing top jaw and its screw. PROVENANCE: Riley Alden Museum. CONDITION: Good over all. Gun appears orig and complete with missing aforementioned top jaw and top jaw screw. Ramrod is a replacement. Iron is overall grey/brown with pitting, functional with smooth pitted bore. 51357-2 JS (4,000-6,000)
