VERY RARE 2ND MODEL BROWN BESS FLINTLOCK MUSKET BRANDED "CUMBERLAND" FOR CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NOVA SCOTIA MILITIA."BROWN BESS2ND MODELNSN78Cal. 78. Standard configuration of 2nd Model Brown Bess, 57-3/4" overall with 42" rnd bbl with no discernible bbl markings remain. Lock marked "HENSHAW" and branded on left side of buttstock in almost 7" panel "CUMBERLAND" over "XIX". There is also "17" cut into bottom of stock below. There are no other discernible markings than a few scattered British proofs on stock rear of trigger guard and rear of lock escutcheon. Gun is a later 2nd Model with Pratt's improvements dating after 1778. CONDITION: Overall good as restored. Re-conversion, top jaw screw is replacement as are sling swivels. Bbl cleaned and pitted. Lock is functional with some newer file marks where apparently refitted to stock on bottom. Brass hardware has light to medium mustard patina. Stock is restored with several inset repairs including 2" at toe and restored forestock tip including brass nosecap, several cracks and insets are well disguised in restoration but "CUMBERLAND" brand appears orig. Mechanically sluggish with smooth rusted bore. 31377-9 JS (4,000-6,000)
