WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 TRENCH GUN WITH BAYONET AND SLING.WINCHESTER1897 TRENCHE67891612 GAUGEW/SLING, BAYONET W/SCABBARDMODERN; C&RCal. 12 ga. 20" cylinder bore bbl. Bbl has ventilated steel handguard with bayonet mount at the muzzle. 3/4" magazine, full blue finish, straight grained American walnut stocks with Winchester hard rubber buttplate. Bbl shows Winchester address, Cal. designation, and choke designation rolled on the left side at the breech. There is a "WP" proof mark stamped on top of the bbl and on front ring of the receiver. There are also hardness test punch marks near the "WP" proof marks. Receiver is stamped on the right side in front of ejector port "US" over an ordnance bomb proof. There are hardness test punch marks on the right side of the receiver. SN is stamped on the bottom forward part of receiver. Receiver is of the solid frame type. "MODEL 1897 / WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF." is marked on slide operating rod. Left side of buttstock shows a "W.B." inspector cartouche in a rectangle over an ordnance wheel proof. Hard rubber buttplate is checkered and shows Winchester logo in a circle. Bayonet is correct type for this shotgun. Ricasso on left side is marked "1918 / REMINGTON" in a circle. Right side of blade bears an ordnance bomb proof over "U.S." and a Springfield Eagle proof over "26". Scabbard is olive drab composite with iron mountings and web belt hook. There is a small cartouche stamped on the back of the throat which is not legible. Sling is US contract type and is marked "WESTERN MFG. CO. 1917". Sling is also marked "MAR 1918" over a "WEH" inspector mark. "H. A. B." also appears on the sling. CONDITION: Very fine. Visible part of bbl shows 80%+ bright blue. Markings are sharp. Bbl shroud shows 50%+ bright blue finish on sheet metal portion. Bore is bright and shiny. Bayonet lug has drifted to a dull grey-blue patina and magazine also shows a dull grey-blue finish. Receiver retains 80% bright blue with handling marks and scratches overall. Bolt retains 95% blue. Stocks are very good, full sized with handling marks and scratches overall, and having some staining at the wrist and butt. Cartouche is sharp and clear. Buttplate shows wear at the heel and some staining at the toe with a few small chips around the logo. Bayonet is in very good condition, blade is a coarsely polished silver-grey color with some oil stains. Blade has not been sharpened, ricasso shows blue. Pommel also shows traces of blue, markings are sharp and clear. Scabbard is very good with some staining, metal parts are dark blue-grey patina. Sling is also very good, intact, and with clear markings. Mechanics are crisp. An opportunity to obtain a far above-average, original Winchester Model 1897 "Trench Sweeper". 52616-7 TEP (3,000-5,000)
