SCARCE L.C. SMITH 5E GRADE DOUBLE TRAP 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN WITH FACTORY LETTER.L.C. SMITH5E561612MODERN; C&R; ESACal. 12 ga. 30" Nitro steel bbls. 2-3/4" chambers. Chokes full/full. Full length matted top rib with twin ivory beads and gold bar near breach. Hunter One SST, automatic ejectors, non-automatic safety. Capped pistol grip Monte Carlo buttstock checkered in 2-point pattern with 14" LOP over mushroomed leather faced red pad. Large beavertail forearm with roll-type banjo release checkered in wave and point pattern. Receiver is beautifully rose and scroll engraved. Lock plates with game scene engraving, pointers on right , setters on left, are extremely well executed with great detail, perhaps by Spangler though no signature noted. "Safe" in gold in front of safety slide. All visible SN's match. WEIGHT: 8 lbs, 8 oz. PROVENANCE: Letter from the Cody Firearms Museum indicating that this gun was finished on April 27, 1901. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, as partially restored. Bbls retain 95-97% of an old restored blue finish. Buttstock and forearm are very good and retain most of an older restored finish. Buttstock with grain separations behind locks and bottom left stock finger as well as an old grain separation at wrist. Receiver retains approximately 20% orig case color balance has toned gray. Bores are bright and shiny, with minor orange peel. Mechanics in need of attention, left lock plate screw is striped causing left lock plate to not seat properly and subsequently causing left hammer to not drop when trigger is depressed (a very simple fix). 52437-4 JSL (5,000-8,000)
