RARE EARLY L.C. SMITH FIRST STYLE A-2 GRADE SHOTGUN.L.C. SMITHCROWN5901212 ga. 29 7/8" replacement Bohler steel bbls, 2 3/4" chambers. Chokes full. Full-length matted top rib with white front bead. Dbl checkered triggers, extractor, non-auto safety. Butt stock is highly figured walnut with Creedmore grip, which is fabulously checkered in double Fleur-de-lis pattern, and has 14" LOP over Pachmyr white lined pad. Replacement beavertail forearm with early slide button release is near fully checkered in wave and mullered border pattern. Receiver is fabulously engraved and signed on right lock "Spangler". Engraving consists of pointing setter and pointer on right and 2 setters on left in well-executed game scenes on point. Tops of locks with dime-sized woodcock on left, quail on right. Lock plates are double-stepped with fantastic flower engraving at rear. Front and bottom of receiver with about 75% gorgeous scroll engraving and geometric border pattern. Fences are beaded. Trigger guard with well-executed scroll engraving and large gold inlaid "S" at bow, and scroll-engraved with SN at tang. Blued top level with scroll and geometric design engraving. Weight 8 lbs., 2 oz. CONDITION: Fair. Replacement bbls retain approximately 80% blue with scattered staining and beginning rust. Receiver has gone gray though engraving remains relatively strong, it has scattered pockmarks of beginning rust and staining. Trigger guard has been re-blued and has some significant rust at tang. Replacement forearm retains most of its custom finish. Original butt stock with about half of its older restored finish with scattered handling marks throughout. Minor losses and grain separation around trigger guard tang. Mechanics are functional, bores are bright and shiny. When made, this gun was the top-of-the-line L.C. Smith and it could easily be brought back to its former glory by some of today's artisan restorers. 52602-1 JSL (4,000-6,000)
