EXTRAORDINARILY RARE AND DESIRABLE ANTIQUE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 TRAPPER MODEL SADDLE RING CARBINE WITH 14" BARREL, AND FACTORY LETTER.WINCHESTER1873 SRC39986844 W.C.F.Cal. 44 W.C.F. 14" rnd bbl. Full magazine. Stepped receiver. Saddle ring attached. Blue finish. Straight grain American walnut stocks with carbine buttplate. Standard carbine sights. 14" bbl with proper rapid taper. Accompanying this carbine is a Cody Firearms Museum letter dated 8/5/2016 confirming carbine, cal. 44, bbl length 14", and showing shipment from warehouse on 11/16/1891. Order #15039. Carbines of this type saw extensive use south of the border and are extremely rare especially in this bbl length. 14" Model 1873 saddle ring carbines are so rare that Jim Gordon was not able to find one to picture in his book, Winchester Model 1873 A Tribute. CONDITION: Very good for this model. Carbine has a mottled gray brown patina overall with some heavy pitting, especially on the bbl. The bbl was draw filed long ago to clean rust and all bbl markings have been obliterated. The deep patina shows on top of the file marks. Bbl dimensions are correct for this bbl length. Forearm is 7-5/8" long which is also correct. Forearm matches the bbl taper. The stepped receiver is also correct for this type of carbine. Carbine sights are good. Ladder sight is marked 1873. Bore is dark with visible rifling. A saddle ring shadow is present over the gray patina. Upper tang mark is legible and sharp. Elevator has been polished and cleaned and is developing new patina with numerous scratches and dents overall. SN is washed out but legible. Dust cover is correct. Stocks are very good, have been lightly cleaned and show numerous handling marks overall under a coat of varnish. Sling swivel mortise is present at bottom of buttstock. This is an opportunity to obtain the rarest of all Winchester Model 1873 Trapper Carbines. Note: This carbine was offered in the Julia sale in April of 2017 where an addendum was added stating the bbl chamber was plug welded in place. Upon further examination this was found to be an old brass case that was stuck to the side walls of the chamber. This has been removed and the carbine has been test fired showing that the chamber is intact. Two spent cases will be provided to the buyer as evidence of this fact. 52615-1 TEP (13,000-15,000)
