OUTSTANDING COLT MODEL 1848 BABY DRAGOON REVOLVER.COLT1848 BABY DRAGOON TYPE II697331 CALCal. 31. 5" bbl, blue and case colored finish, silver plated grip straps, 1-pc walnut grip. Bbl has correct 2-line address bordered by dashes that reads from right side. Bbl rifling is nearly straight with a very slight right hand twist which is correct for this model. Frame shows 2-line Colt Patent mark on the forward left side. SNs match on bbl, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, arbor and cylinder. SN is stamped with correct dies with open "6", open "9", flat top "7" and flat top "3". SN is also written twice in pencil in backstrap channel of grip and butt channel. Arbor is dished at the front for loading which is correct for this model. Trigger guard has small bolsters around screws at the rear. Inspector initial "T" appears on right side of trigger guard. Inspector initial "K" is stamped on bottom of trigger guard to the right of front screw. Cylinder shows an intact single safety pin at that is in line with SN mark which is also correct. Colt's Patent mark on cylinder reads from the sweep at the heel. Cylinder shows a Texas Ranger and Indian scene. Cylinder has "COLT'S / PATENT / 6973" stamped in proper place in alignment with safety pin. Cylinder ratchet is also of the correct early type. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl shows a smooth grey/brown patina with slight traces of blue on bbl lug and near the front sight. Bbl flats are sharp, bbl address is sharp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Frame retains a considerable amount of case color finish that has turned bright on the right recoil shield. Marking is sharp. Frame screws show considerable blue. Arbor and wedge are loose in frame which may account for the fact that this revolver saw such little use. Trigger guard shows nearly all of the silver plate finish with some high point wear on the trigger guard bow. SN is sharp. Backstrap retains nearly all of the silver finish with some wear at the toe. Markings are sharp. Cylinder shows a smooth blue/brown patina overall. Cylinder scene is nearly complete with one small area of erosion where cylinder rested against frame. All markings are sharp, safety pin is intact, chambers are very clean. Hammer shows a grey/brown patina with hints of muted case color. Trigger shows considerable orig blue. Grip is fine and retains nearly all of varnish the finish with small dents overall and high point wear at the bottom of each side. Mechanics are crisp. This is a very rare example of a Colt Baby Dragoon revolver that saw very little use. 52614-1 TEP89 (4,000-6,000)
