SCARCE REMINGTON PERCUSSION CANE GUN WITH CURVED WOODEN HANDLE.REMINGTONCANE GUN1231 PERCCal. 31 Perc. Scarce Remington percussion cane gun, 35" overall with short handle shaft, a German silver band at the transition from handle to shaft with a checkered domed trigger button. The tip is of iron with patent and address markings along with the SN. There is a sight band about 1/2" above the tip which is missing its bead. Handle is a wooden replacement that is a neat reproduction of an orig curved handle. The entire shaft is of gutta percha that has turned dark chocolate brown. There is a longitudinal hairline crack that runs from the trigger button opening to the joint and another repaired crack near the tip that is nearly unnoticeable. According to Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms there were about 500 of these rare canes produced 1858-1866. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Very good. Shaft and handle shaft with cracks as noted, otherwise, the gutta percha is sound and clean with a wonderful dark chocolate patina. The wooden handle has a hairline crack at the collar and shows about 80% black finish. Mechanics are fine. Bright bore. 51958-38 JRL (2,000-3,000)
