SMALL CHEST AND ORNAMENTAL SASH ATTRIBUTED TO GENERAL FREDERICK BENTEEN.

Small 7" x 5" x 4" miniature wood domed chest with tacked leather veneer inscribed "F. W. BENTEEN". Contained within small chest is a green velvet with gold trimmed sash showing embroidered crossed sabers and a single star. Sash is in style of fraternal and ceremonial sashes, typical of Victorian era. Frederick William Benteen (1834-1898) was a military officer during the Civil War and Indian Wars. He is best known for not complying with George Armstrong Custer's order to bring up ammunition during attack at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Benteen of course would survive along with the rest of Reno's command. Benteen stayed in the military and was brevetted Brigadier General February 27, 1890. We have no provenance or history on this box, nor do we know of sash's function. Paper label inside miniature trunk reads "JAMES DONALDSON, / NO. 247 WATER-STREET, NEAR PECK-SLIP, / NEW-YORK / MANUFACTURE OF / TRUNKS, COLLARS & HARNESS". SIZE: PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Box is overall good. Missing some tacks, leather repairs to hinges internally, functional key. Sash is about 3' overall by 3-1/4" wide. Good overall with sewn repairs to backing. 51958-13 JS (2,000-3,000)
