UNIQUE CIRCA 1840 UNDERHAMMER PISTOL, PROBABLY SOUTHERN, INSCRIBED TO A PREACHER. REV. KIRKPATRICK PERC UNDERHAMMER PISTOL NSN 36 Cal. 36. 10-1/2" overall with 6" oct bbl with fixed rear sight on tang and protected German silver blade front sight. Maple grips have central decorated iron band with inset 8-pointed silver stars, the right side terminating in a 1-1/2" belt hook. 14 other small silver insets are found in wood. This most unusual underhammer has unique mechanism with long spring hammer that is operated by pulling trigger and extension of trigger pulls hammer down and is finally released when extensions length is passed by bar above trigger. Gun is still mechanically functional, quite unique and made by a very resourceful hand. Gilted brass band and braided insets also at breech and center of bbl has silver inset plaque banded by gilt brass, inscribed "REVd KIRKPATRICK". CONDITION: Good overall. Gun appears all orig and complete. Unique hammer and trigger slightly loose, but as noted, still quite functional. Iron overall is dark grey/patina with staining and light pitting. Stocks are well fit with large hairline crack on right side, slightly shrunk with hand worn patina, all insets intact. This is a unique gun for form which you will probably never see again, especially carried by a preacher. 52594-27 JS (1,500-2,500)
